The Register of Deeds office serves as custodian for all real estate related documents as well as vital records for the county. As legal custodian of these records the Register of Deeds Office files and records deeds, deeds of trust, maps, easements, leases, assignments, and Uniform Commercial Codes (UCCS) as fixture filings on real property. We also issue marriage licenses and certify births, deaths, and marriages. Notary Public commissions are recorded here and we administer the oath to Notary Public’s that reside in Greene County.

The Greene County Register of Deeds office is located in the Greene County Courthouse at 301 N. Greene Street in Snow Hill, North Carolina. The office hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday excluding holidays.

Deeds

All deeds to be recorded in Greene County must have a tax form signed by the Greene County Tax Office to accompany your deed at the time of recording.

Birth, Death & Marriage Certificate Requirements

You may apply for a certified copy of birth, death or marriage certificate by:

In person by completing the application form and submitting a driver’s license or picture identification card issued by DMV. The fee is $10.00 in cash.

Request by mail. Fill out the Application for a copy of Birth, Death or Marriage Certificate for the specific certificate you desire, check the appropriate relationship line, and complete the bottom section of the application (be sure to sign the application). Mail the completed application, a copy of your State issued Picture ID or Driver’s License, a money order for $10.00 made payable to the Greene County Register of Deeds (no personal checks) and a self-addressed, postage paid envelope to Greene County Register of Deeds, PO Box 86, Snow Hill, NC 28580. We will return your certificate as soon as possible.

Requirements for Marriage License

Each individual 18 years old and older applying for a marriage license in the Greene County Register of Deeds Office must have the following:

  • Certified birth certificate
  • State issued Picture ID or Driver’s License. If you are not a resident of the United States you must have a passport
  • Social Security Card
  • For anyone previously married we must have a copy of your divorce decree or spouse’s death certificate

Marriage licenses are issued between 9:00am and 4:00pm.

Fee for Marriage license: $60 (Cash Only)

For any applicant under the age of 18, please contact our office.

Regardless of the county of marriage, the licenses must be returned to the county in which it was issued.
