Candidates for the Office of Sheriff

North Carolina SESSION LAW 2021-107 became effective October 1, 2021, and requires that any candidate or appointee for the Office of Sheriff must disclose any and all Felony convictions, including any expunged felony convictions. Any individual filing notice of candidacy must provide a Disclosure Statement prepared by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.  Potential candidates for the Office of Sheriff may obtain the required Disclosure Statement by providing the following documents to the Sheriffs’ Standards Division:

  1. A complete, legible, and properly notarized “Qualifications for Sheriff/Expunction” form; 

 

  1. A completed and processed AOC-CR-280 form [note: you are responsible for submitting this form to the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) for processing and for providing it to the Sheriffs’ Standards Division with your “Qualifications for Sheriff/Expunction” form]; https://www.nccourts.gov/documents/forms/law-enforcement-application-for-verification-of-expunction.

 

  1. A fingerprint card must be submitted with your application. “Reason Fingerprinted” must indicate “Candidate for the Office of Sheriff” and “Agency” must indicate the County Sheriff’s Office for which you are a candidate.

Any individual filing notice of candidacy must provide a Disclosure Statement prepared by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.
