Greene County, NC is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Tax Listing Assistant in the Tax Department. This is a seasonal position that involves working during and after the annual listing period, from January through April each year, with a maximum of 500 hours per year. Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs tax listing duties, provides general information to the public on property tax laws and policies, performs data entry functions, reviews data for accuracy and completeness, and related work as assigned. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Tax Administrator.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Provides excellent customer service in person, and by telephone and email; answers inquiries about tax listings, property records, procedures and requirements or refers to others as necessary.
Assists taxpayers, both individuals and businesses, with listing of individual personal property, business personal property, changes and improvements made to real property.
Enters tax listing forms into the data base and identifies issues that require additional research.
Provides assistance to taxpayers, both individuals and businesses, tax preparers, accountants, and the general public in researching records, and in providing general information on tax laws and policies.
Performs a variety of clerical duties to support office functions including opening, sorting and distributing mail; organizing listing forms, stuffing envelopes and mailing listing forms, late listing property; preparing and sending correspondence to taxpayers who fail to list property; granting extensions to list; filing forms, correspondence, etc.; proficient use of Word and Excel.
Assists taxpayers with inquiries regarding property tax listing forms, responding to questions or referring taxpayer to appropriate staff; identifies if abstracts are late; compares abstract to computer data and refers inconsistencies to higher level staff.
Utilize government and independent resources to review records and make determination of situs and taxability.
Check death records and update tax account information; determine if deceased received a property tax exclusion, exemption, or deferment; remove exclusions, exemptions, and deferments, when necessary, in order to process tax bills correctly.
Additional Job Duties
May assist in other sections of the Tax Office.

Working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
Some knowledge of North Carolina Machinery Act, County tax policies and procedures concerning listing, assessment, billing and collection.
Knowledge of the application of information technology to the work including specialized tax software programs.

Ability to review and correct data and proof own work.
Ability to apply basic principles and laws regarding property taxes to answer questions and assist the public.
Ability to compute figures rapidly and accurately.
Ability to read tax maps and utilize GIS.

procedures, and handling angry customers.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and
county officials.
Ability to operate calculators, computers and other assigned equipment with speed, accuracy, and

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of stooping, reaching, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform sedentary work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, accounting, to operate a computer terminal, and extensive reading at distances close to the eyes.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and moderate customer service and experience in clerical work, preferably in a tax related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of North Carolina driver’s license.
Additional appropriate training will be provided upon hire.
