The North Carolina General Assembly passed a law (Tag & Tax System) to create a combined motor vehicle registration renewal and property tax collection system. Beginning September, 2013, your annual vehicle inspection, registration renewal and property tax are all due the same month each year. About 60 days before your vehicle registration expires, NCDMV will mail you a renewal notice to the mailing address they have on record. The notice includes both your vehicle’s registration fees and taxes due.

How to Pay the Combined Notice

Payment for the combined notice cannot be made at the county tax office. You will pay both the registration fee and property taxes to the NC DMV using one of the payment options listed below:

For questions regarding the Registration Renewal and Property Tax Notice you received through the Tag & Tax Together Program, please review the following options:

Contact the NC DMV at 919-814-1779:

  • For questions regarding the registration fee shown on the notice
  • If you moved your vehicle out of Greene County and the correct taxing jurisdictions are not displayed
  • If the county code on your notice is not correct
  • If your address is not correct on the notice
  • If the license plate on the notice was transferred to another car
  • If the vehicle on the notice is correct but now has a different license plate

Contact the Greene County Tax Department at 252-747-3615:

  • To appeal the vehicle’s value
  • If the tax district is incorrect on your notice
  • If the vehicle was registered in Greene County last year but has moved to a new taxing jurisdiction within Greene County that is not reflected on the notice
  • If you are active-duty military and your home of record is not North Carolina

You may disregard the notice if:

  • You no longer own the vehicle and surrendered the license plate to the NC DMV
  • You do not intend to register the vehicle in North Carolina (Please be advised that if you own an unregistered vehicle on January 1, you must list it for taxation with the Greene County Tax Department each January, during the listing period.)

Receipts for Motor Vehicle Taxes

Vehicle property tax receipts are now available on the MyDMV portal. Access by clicking on the following link: https://edmv.ncdot.gov/MyDMV/

Once logged in, click on Correspondence on the right middle area of the window. Under Correspondence, select the year desired for vehicle property taxes and all vehicles paid for in that year will display with the total taxes paid for each vehicle in that calendar year. Businesses will not be able to access tax information through the MyDMV portal.
